John J. Hayes

John J. Hayes, 89, a daily communicant at St. Thomas More, Breezy Point where he served as a sexton, died Aug. 14. Before moving to Breezy Point full-time over 20 years ago, he had been a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dyker Heights.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 18 at St. Thomas More Church.

A second grade detective, he retired out of the 72nd Precinct Detective Squad, NYPD, in 1982, and then worked as an investigator for the NYS Attorney General’s Office.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and again during the Korean War.

He is survived by his sons, John, Michael, Kevin, Francis (ret. NYPD Sgt.), Thomas, and daughters Margaret and Patricia; and his sisters Cele, Sister Cecelia James, O.P., Kathleen, Patty Ann, Mary and Ginny; and his brother Terence (ret. NYPD, NYDA’s Office).

He was pre-deceased by his wife of 50 years, Muriel.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Brooklyn-Queens Holy Name Society and the NYPD-Navy Association.

Burial was in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
