On Sunday, Oct. 2, Italian Catholics will gather in prayerful remembrance of the victims of the earthquakes in Italy that took place one month ago. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will join more than 2,000 members of the Italian community in Brooklyn and Queens for a procession and Mass at St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral, Prospect Heights.
These community members represent Italian churches, religious clubs and social organizations, all under the umbrella of the Italian Apostolate, which is responsible for ensuring the spiritual needs of Italian immigrants living in Brooklyn and Queens.
The day will begin at 3 p.m. with a street procession in honor of the Guardian Angels. Starting at the entrance to Prospect Park, and proceeding through Grand Army Plaza, the march will make its way down Vanderbilt Ave. and to Pacific St., where participants will enter the Co-Cathedral for the 4 p.m. Mass celebrated in Italian by the bishop and the Italian clergy. The Mass will air live at 4 p.m. on NET-TV.
Participants will enter the co-cathedral through its Holy Door, marked this year for the Extraordinary Year of Mercy established by Pope Francis. In addition, a special collection will be taken up to support the towns affected by the devastating earthquakes in central Italy.
