Green-WoodFather James Cunningham, pastor of Holy Name of Jesus parish, Park Slope, greets parishioners after celebrating Mass in the chapel at historic Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.

Holy Name sponsored a special All Souls’ Day Mass for the first time in the cemetery that adjoins parish boundaries. Concelebrating was Father Michael Bruno, parochial vicar of St. Luke’s, Whitestone. Over 170 people attended.

Lovely..Although Green-Wood has been non-sectarian with some Protestant leanings (Its founder Henry Evelyn Pierrepoint was a devout Episcopalian), many prominent, wealthy Roman Catholic families made Green-Wood their last resting place and today Roman Catholic interments make up the majority of burials in the cemetery (The exact number of Catholics buried in Green-Wood could far exceed the deceased from other faith backgrounds)

    Green-Wood is a perfect example of a Christian cemetery with its historic Neo-Gothic gates depicting scenes from the New Testament including Lazarus, The Widow’s Son, and Jesus’ Resurrection over the gateways and has been serving the Catholic community since 1840.
