Letters to the Editor

Friendship With Books

Dear Editor: “There is no Frigate like a Book/ To take us Lands away/ Nor any Coursers like a Page/ Of prancing Poetry –/ This Traverse may the poorest take/ Without oppress of Toll –/ How frugal is the Chariot/ That bears the Human Soul.“

– Emily Dickinson

I agree with Msgr. Steve Ferrari (Sept. 17) about the pleasure of reading; I set aside time to do some every day.

And I invite him to consider availing himself of some of those devices he terms “demonic,” as well. They are, after all, only tools, but they allow better use of one’s time. I use one or two of them myself, and they allow me to finish my work more quickly so that I can, at the end of the day, enjoy a good book.
