Former Military Bishop Dies in California

Former Auxiliary Bishop Joseph J. Madera of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, died on Jan. 21 in Culver City, Calif. He was 89.

A native of San Francisco, he entered the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit and was ordained June 15, 1957.

In 1979, he was named Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno and ordained a bishop March 4, 1980. Three months later, he became bishop of Fresno.

He served in the Military Services Archdiocese from 1991 to 2004 as an auxiliary to the late Archbishop Joseph T. Dimino, and later, to Cardinal Edwin O’Brien.

After retirement from the military, he rejoined the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit and resided for seven years in St. Martha parish, Huntington Park, Calif.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Jan. 30 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Oxnard, Calif., and Jan. 31 at St. John’s Cathedral, Fresno.

He is survived by his sister, Carmen Madera.
