A Mass of Christian Burial for Msgr. John Hartmann, 89, pastor emeritus of Sacred Heart parish, East Glendale, was celebrated Aug. 17 at St. Margaret’s Church in Madison, Conn. He died Aug. 11 at his private residence in Connecticut.

Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto was the main celebrant of the funeral Mass. Special concelebrants included Msgr. John Conte of the Hartford Archdiocese, Conn. Father James Shanley from the archdiocese gave the homily.

A native of Richmond Hill, he attended St. Benedict Joseph Labre School; Cathedral Prep and College, Brooklyn; and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, L.I.

He was ordained by Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy on June 6, 1953 at St. James Pro-Cathedral in Downtown Brooklyn.

He served as an assistant at Holy Child, Richmond Hill, 1953-63, and then was assigned as a priest-counselor at Mater Christi H.S., Astoria, 1963-74. He was an assistant at St. Mel’s, Flushing, 1974-83. In 1983, he was named pastor of Sacred Heart, and served there until he retired in 1998.

He was named a monsignor in 1988.

He had done post-graduate studies at Fordham University, New York Theological Seminary and the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health.

Immediate survivors include his brother, Robert. He was predeceased by his nephew, the late Msgr. Thomas Hartmann of the Rockville Centre Diocese.

Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Conn.
