Fontbonne Shocks at GCHSAA Swim Championships

On Feb. 3, the Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, swim team finished second at the GCHSAA championships held at the Eisenhower Park Aquatic Center, East Meadow, L.I.

The Bonnies entered the meet with the best record in Brooklyn and finished ahead of Staten Island rivals Notre Dame Academy and St. Joseph Hill. Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, won this year’s meet.

The second place finish is the highest team finish in the 45 years that the swim program has been in existence. Head Coach Kathi Kocur and her assistants Joe Verpone, Bill Shea, K.J. Hanley and Laura Shea Delin were thrilled to see their team’s hard work pay off and are already looking forward to next season.

The following swimmers won medals: Tara Muldoon 50m free, 100m free; Megan Rochelle, 50m free; Meghan Maloney, 50m free; Shannon Maroney, 500m free; Mary Jane Anderson, 100m backstroke; and Laura Keim, 100m breaststroke.

Though the team will graduate 10 seniors, Coach Kocur is confident that the team will be able to fill those spots with incoming freshmen eager to join one of the top private school programs in N.Y.C.
