Fontbonne Hall Academy Principal Mary Ann Spicijaric announced that senior Isabella Grillo has been named a Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to this scholastically talented senior.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.

“These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Fontbonne offers its students many opportunities for academic growth, and the possibilities are endless. Among these opportunities is the Brown University PreCollege Scholars Program in Engineering, a yearlong online course of study taught by faculty from Brown University’s School of Engineering and overseen by Brown’s School of Professional Studies and Pre-College Programs. Working with Brown University instructors, students participate in approximately five hours of coursework per week, including lab and demo activities, online discussions, assignments and design projects. The Brown Pre-College Scholars Program in Engineering is one of the courses that a student elects to take in order to fulfill the requirements for Fontbonne’s STEM Diploma with an engineering concentration. Fontbonne Hall Academy is proud to be the only high school in the U.S. to offer this prestigious course.

Fontbonne students participating in the Brown Pre-College Scholars Program in Engineering recently had the chance to visit Brown University. Students were greeted by Brown professors and had the opportunity to socialize with current Brown engineering students and inquire about their courses, projects and career goals. Students also sat in on an Introduction to Engineering lecture and toured the university’s engineering labs.

With experiences such as this one, Fontbonne students are well prepared for the future. At this year’s College Fair, Fontbonne welcomed representatives from over 60 colleges and universities, and students were able to explore the exciting possibilities that are waiting for them.
