Final Rites for Passionist Priest

Father O’Rourke

Father Peter O’Rourke, a Passionist priest, died Aug. 23 at Long Island Veterans Home, Stony Brook, L.I. He was 85.

Born in Manhattan, he attended Rice H.S., St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, and then served in the U.S. Army, 1952-54.

He studied at Holy Cross Seminary, Dunkirk, and entered the Passionist community. He professed vows at St. Paul of the Cross Monastery, Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1957. He was ordained by Bishop Quentin Olwell, a Passionist bishop in the Philippines, on May 1, 1964.

Among his many assignments, Father O’Rourke served in hospital and parochial ministry in various Long Island parishes and hospitals. He continued as chaplain of Long Island Veterans Hospital until 2016. He resided for some time at the Passionists’ Monastery in Jamaica Estates.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at Immaculate Conception Monastery in Jamaica.

Burial was in Immaculate Conception Monastery Cemetery.
