Father Cyril F. Doody

Father Cyril F. Doody, a retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, died on Sept. 3 at his private residence in Sag Harbor, L.I. He was 89.

His funeral Mass was offered on Sept. 11 at Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto was the main celebrant, and Father Edward Kachurka, pastor of Mary’s Nativity – St. Ann, Flushing, preached the homily. Fathers Doody and Kachurka were stationed together at St. Mark’s in Sheepshead Bay for eight years.

“He was a quiet and unassuming priest,” Father Kachurka said of Father Doody. “He was very good with people.”

Born in 1930, Father Doody served as a parochial vicar at the following parishes: St. Thomas Aquinas; St. Margaret, Middle Village; Resurrection-Ascension, Rego Park; Blessed Sacrament, Jackson Heights; St. Kevin, Flushing; St. Robert Bellarmine, Bayside; Sacred Heart, Bayside; and St. Mark, Sheepshead Bay. He also taught at Cathedral Prep and Seminary in Elmhurst. Father Kachurka said one of Father Doody’s students from Cathedral Prep remembered the priest as a quiet teacher who kept class in order. “You learned a lot from him,” the student said. Father Doody’s burial was at St. Andrew Cemetery in Sag Harbor.
