Dear Editor: In 1959, I left the Trappist Monastery in Kentucky where I was a lay brother. I am now 85 and retired from the New York State Corrections where I was a narcotics parole officer and later a prison counselor.
Coming to Brooklyn in 1959, I lived in Fort Greene where I met Father Matt Foley at Sacred Heart Church. Later he was transferred to Epiphany parish where he remained until 2008 when he retired to Bethel, N.Y., where he helps Mexican Catholic families.
Deacon Angel Baez worked with Father (now-Msgr.) Foley in Brooklyn with the youth program. Deacon Angel moved to Orange County, N.Y., with his married daughter’s family until he had to go to assisted living where he died July 26.
He helped many in Epiphany during his years there.
