The Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) of Brooklyn and Queens held its second annual soccer outing on Sept. 13.
Nearly 100 players, coaches and family members attended the event, which this year was with the NY Cosmos at James M. Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University, Hempstead, L.I.
They were treated to an exciting game as the Cosmos beat their NASL rival Atlanta Silverbacks 3-2.
Before the game, the group met with Cosmos’ starting goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer. Maurer discussed how his faith is a central part of his life both in and away from soccer. He answered questions from the group and posed for pictures with the various CYO soccer teams in attendance.
The night also featured a heroes parade honoring members of the military, and after the game, the CYO players were able to come on field to take penalty kicks.
Among the parishes represented were St. Anastasia, Douglaston; St. Francis of Assisi, Astoria; and Our Lady of Hope, Middle Village. All received gifts compliments of the Cosmos and went home with smiles on their faces, looking forward to their next CYO soccer game and to next year’s outing.
