Controversial Renaming

Dear Editor: Let’s remember, Ormond Pl. was renamed Claver Pl. to honor and recognize St. Peter Claver’s devotion in ministry to the African slaves (“Bed-Stuy Parish Fights Street Naming for Controversial Figure,” Feb. 16). St. Peter Claver Church’s contributions to education and cultural enrichment in the black community dates back to the 1920’s. Its parishioners and the Brooklyn Diocese must determine after whom the street is co-named, as afforded every other religious institution. The only viable person is Monsignor Quinn who is on the path to canonization. He laid the foundation and pioneered educational, cultural and housing programs beneficial to the black community.

This is not to dismiss Jitu Weusi’s accomplishments, but plant a tree, place a plaque where The East once stood. SPC still stands strong and continues its mission to serve, not only the Black community, but the community at large.
