The Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, varsity lacrosse team captured the CHSAA ‘B’ Division city championship with a 5-3 victory over Cardinal Hayes H.S., the Bronx. The team received stellar goaltending from senior Paul Schwarz, and senior Andrew Lauro notched the go-ahead goal. Junior James Vega tallied three assists.
The city championship crown capped off a 6-2 campaign for the Clippers, which relied heavily on its defense throughout the season to keep its opponents off the scoreboard.
“We really built the team around a strong defense,” said head coach Tomas Gonzalez, a 1992 graduate of Xaverian. “The boys had key wins during the year against tough division rivals like Loughlin and Xavier and were able to build momentum for the playoffs.”
Schwarz and Lauro represented the CHSAA in the annual N.Y.C. Mayor’s Cup All-Star Challenge. Seniors Christian Bono, Brian Santanelli and Jay Stauble and juniors Alex Konyk and Vega were named First-Team All-CHSAA. Seniors Michael Beale, Andrew Gallagher and Lou Springer and juniors John Harte and Tomas Gonzalez Jr. earned Second-Team honors.
