Three Christian Brothers with ties to the Brooklyn Diocese are marking their 50th years with the congregation. They are:

Brother John Bassett, F.S.C., has been a teacher and a chaplain.

He began teaching at Queen of Peace H.S., North Arlington, N.J. He also has taught in Lincroft and Paramus, N.J., as well as in Syracuse, Yonkers, and Manhattan, with a brief tenure in Warren, Mich.

In the early 1990s, he began his ministry as a chaplain, first at Sloan Kettering Hospital, Manhattan, and now is at Bishop Mugavero Nursing Home, Brooklyn.
 
 

Brother Joseph Garito, F.S.C., has spent all of his ministry in the Diocese of Brooklyn.

He was a teacher and assistant principal at St. Cecilia’s School, Greenpoint, and later worked for the Catholic Guardian Society. Those experiences served him well as he transitioned to the Christian Brothers’ Martin de Porres School, currently in Elmont, L.I.

 

Brother Philip Rofrano, F.S.C., started teaching at Mater Christi H.S., Astoria. In 1972, he, four other Brothers and a lay person, with a grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, started the A.S.F.E.C. (Alternative Solutions for Exceptional Children). The program moved into the Martin de Porres Community Center in the Astoria Housing Projects, and would later take the center’s name.

He will step down from his post as executive director of the MDP Group Homes this year.
