Christ Is Risen Art Contest

The Tablet, with the collaboration of Archbishop John Hughes Knights of Columbus Council No. 481, invited youth from Brooklyn and Queens to participate in the annual “Christ Is Risen Art Contest.” Participants from first grade to high school submitted entries of all shapes and sizes depicting the mystery of the Resurrection.

First place in high school went to senior Maria DiCarlo, Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, who used acrylic paint.

“It is Jesus with Mary, His mother.” said DiCarlo. “I think she’s very grateful that He’s risen again and she’s very proud of Him.”

Every piece of art was evaluated on artistic ability and how well the artist depicted the spirit of Easter. Winners were invited by the Knights to an award ceremony to present them with a scholarship, certificates and medals.

Third-grader Anastasia Chabanov from Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy, Gravesend, was a repeat winner. She also won the “Keep Christ in Christmas” last December. Chabanov said it was a great feeling of accomplishment.

“It’s Jesus giving her a golden egg and it has everlasting life on it, because that’s the best gift He could give us,” she said, describing her work.

Eighth-grader Coralis Rivera and her sister, high school sophomore Brithney Rivera, both attend All Saints Church, Williamsburg, and submitted different portraits using colored pencils, drawing life-like pictures of Jesus after He rose from the dead.

“Through art you can teach people a lot of things,” said Brithney, who would like to someday create animations based on the Catholic Church, “so I’m thinking that while I’m growing up and I keep pursuing my techniques in art, I can show others God’s love through that art.”

Judges also awarded honorable mentions. Artwork from the honorable mentions and more photos from the awards ceremony can be viewed online at thetablet.org.
