At St. Agatha Church, Sunset Park, about 300 Chinese parishioners plus a few dozen others joined Auxiliary Bishop James Massa, moderator of the Curia, in a joyful Chinese New Year celebration, beginning with the Eucharist and Ancestor Veneration Ceremony, followed by a New Year’s Party in the parish school. In his homily, Bishop Massa explained that the Church includes multi-cultural celebrations not merely for the sake of being multi-cultural, but because the Church recognizes that it can learn from these ceremonies. “The net of Peter is ever expanding,” said Bishop Massa, “but it cannot be broken.” Father Vincentius Do, pastor, and Father Joseph Lin, parochial vicar, assisted Bishop Massa with the Ancestor Veneration Ceremony. Before the New Year Party’s, Bishop Massa gave red envelopes to children and posed with some Chinese dancers.
