Catholic Doctrine on War

Dear Editor: Your Nov. 10 Editor’s Space reminds us that, “We often forget that World War II changed the name of the Great War (‘the war to end all wars’) into World War I.”

You also remind us that “There is hardly a more consequential decision for any person – especially for a Christian – than going to war.” Good point.

But to be more complete, The Tablet should have added that since the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church (see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church) has powerfully taught the human right of conscientious objection to both all wars and specific wars.
