Last week people around the world celebrated Earth Day. Established in 1970, Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22. It is a day to demonstrate support for environmental protection. More than 193 countries are part of the Earth Day Network and hold coordinated events to raise awareness about respecting and protecting the earth. This is a good time to reflect on what we are called to do as Catholics to care for the earth.

As we celebrate the third Sunday of Easter and the joy of the Risen Christ, there are conversations happening around the table in the homes of many of our young families throughout the Diocese. They are not focused on the upcoming tax filing deadline (this Tuesday, April 17, if you still need the reminder); they are talking about the choice of education for their children.

As we approach Holy Week this year, it might be good to consider how we will participate in our prayer and liturgies, as well as other events taking place during this most holy time of our liturgical season. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday with the blessing of palm.
In the next few days, the Church celebrates two important feasts: St. Patrick’s Day and St. Joseph’s Day. In our own Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens, it seems to be that the Irish celebrate St. Patrick and the Italians celebrate St. Joseph. As we know, however, intermarriage has made our families multi-ethnic.

Lent is almost half over, but it is never too late to start if perhaps our resolutions have not been fulfilled or if we did not even make any resolutions. This is a good time to begin again, because no matter what we may not have done, what we can do is much more important to our keeping of the season of Lent.

In our so-called sophisticated society, the world may scoff and tell you there is no Devil. As our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has cautioned, “This generation, and many others, have been led to believe that the Devil is a myth, a figure, an idea, the idea of evil. But the Devil exists and we must fight against him.”
