Sister M. Francis Regis Vagt, I.H.M., a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for almost 65 years, died July 28, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, Pa. She would have turned 86 on Sept. 10.

Bishop Richard J. Garcia

Bishop Richard J. Garcia, who headed the Diocese of Monterey, Calif., since 2007, died July 11 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 71.

Doris Gomez de Sanchez, the sister of Deacon Guillermo D. Gomez of St. Gerard Majella Church, Hollis, died in Colombia after a long illness.

Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen

Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen, who attended the Second Vatican Council, became a pioneer in the ecumenical movement and then later offered a pacifist voice against war and the production of nuclear weapons, died July 22 at home in Helena, Mont.

Sister Mary Travers, R.S.M.

Sister Mary Travers, R.S.M., a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 66 years, died June 16 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood. She was 87.

Sister Edward Joseph Murphy, C.S.J.

Sister Edward Joseph Murphy, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 86 years, died July 10 on hospice care in Maria Regina Residence. She was 104.

Father Thomas Forrest, C.Ss.R.

Father Thomas Forrest, C.Ss.R., a Redemptorist priest for nearly 70 years, died July 16, two days before his 91st birthday.

Father Richard V. Kuhn, S.M.

Father Richard V. Kuhn, S.M., who was about to celebrate his 60th anniversary as a Marianist priest, died July 5.  He was 90.
