TOTOWA, N.J. (CNS) – Father Benedict J. Groeschel, who was a founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, a leading pro-life figure and popular author, retreat master and preacher, died Oct. 3 at St. Joseph’s Home for the elderly in Totowa after a long illness. He was 81.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Msgr. Edward J. Breen, pastor emeritus of Our Lady of Fatima, East Elmhurst, will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 13, at the church. He died Sept. 8 at Bishop Mugavero Residence, Douglaston. He was 82.
Bishop Cirilo B. Flores of San Diego died Sept. 6 of complications from prostate cancer. He was 66.
Cardinal Edmund C. Szoka, who rose from poor beginnings to reach the highest levels of service to the Church, died Aug. 20 at Providence Park Hospital in Novi, Mich. The cardinal, who was 86, died of natural causes.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 3 for retired Bishop John J. Nevins of Venice, Fla., the founding bishop of the diocese.
