Cathedral Club Is a Sign of Catholic Maturity

One of the reasons that the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn was established in 1900 was to assist Catholics with moving into the public arena. It was a time when Catholics were not always welcomed. They were the outcasts in a Protestant country that was suspect of the papacy having too much influence over American life.

Taking a New Look at Catholic Press Month

February used to be celebrated with many activities as Catholic Press Month. We would have posters, subscription drives and announcements from the pulpit.

These days, the communications apostolate has become more diverse. Right here in our own diocese, we have the DeSales Media Group which is the parent company of The Tablet as well NET-TV, the diocesan information office, educational television for our schools, and social media and IT division that assists communications across the diocese.

Pro Vita Mass Returns, With Assist from K. of C.

The Diocese’s Pro Vita Mass has been revived and returned to St. James Cathedral-Basilica after an absence of about 10 years.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio decided to schedule the liturgy at the urging of the Knights of Columbus, who came out in force to support the event on Sunday, Jan. 25, despite the inclement weather.

Common Sense Makes Little Sense to Some

In his remarks about the attack on Charlie Hebdo, the pope is not justifying killing someone who insults one’s faith, but he is saying that no one has the right to insult another’s religion and if they do so, they are going to provoke a reaction.

Bright Christmas Total Comes Close to Record

Well, Tablet readers have done it again! Our Bright Christmas Campaign finished with its second highest total, second only to 2012 when we were responding to Hurricane Sandy.

This year, 3,962 readers – 389 less than last year – donated $133,611 – $1,574 more than last year. That’s an average of $33.72 per donation, which also is higher than last year’s average contribution of $30.77.

All through the day, the people of Corona kept coming to look at what had happened to their parish church, Our Lady of Sorrows. The parishioners, who are mostly Hispanic immigrants, turn out in large numbers for Sunday Mass there. On any given Sunday, there are 12,000 to 13,000 worshippers there. But when they came […]

This Has Not Been the Best of Times

The year 2014 has not been the best of years. And unfortunately, it is ending on a sour note with the assassination of two police officers right here in our diocese. The charlatan politicians and would-be community leaders would have us believe that the underlying problem is racism. The real danger facing us all is […]

Readers Are Responding To Bright Christmas

The donations for Bright Christmas are coming in. This week, I would like to tell from where and whom they are coming. Many of the donors are old friends like Sam Repole, who tells me that he now lives in Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, Dyker Heights. If you ever lived in Park Slope, or […]

Hour Children Prepares For a Brighter Christmas

Sister Tesa Fitzgerald, C.S.J., recently gained national notoriety when she was named the winner of the 2014 Opus Prize for faith-based humanitarian work. We’ve known for years about the good work of Sister Tesa and Hour Children. We’ve been fortunate enough to be able to extend Bright Christmas assistance to them over that time. Hour […]
