The Diocese of Brooklyn is known as the “Diocese of Immigrants.” Its international flavor means that Mass is celebrated in dozens of languages and church pews are filled with parishioners of many nationalities. With that in mind, The Tablet is taking a look at how the different cultures represented in the diocese celebrate Christmas. This week, we focus on Nigeria, Brazil, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Public Housing Tenants in Coney Island Without Cooking Gas for 15 Months

A main gas line sprang a leak on Aug. 30, 2021, forcing the installation of new gas lines in the O’Dwyer Gardens and Surfside Gardens apartment complexes in Coney Island. Gas started to come back on line recently, following a $3.5 million repair project that took 15 months to complete. During that time, 376 residents had no cooking gas.

CCBQ Turkey Giveaway Provides Food, Joy and Relief For Families

Many families in need will be having a turkey for Thanksgiving, despite the high price for the bird — nearly $2 per pound according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (73% higher than last year) — thanks to Catholic Charities Brooklyn & Queens, which distributed free turkeys at Holy Innocents Church in Flatbush, on Monday, Nov. 21.
