On a recent Sunday morning, members of the National Honor Society (NHS) at Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, held a Breakfast Run. They traveled to Stuyvesant Cove Park under the FDR Drive to bring food and personal items to people in need.

Breakfast Run is organized through Midnight Run (midnightrun.org), a volunteer organization that coordinates the donation and distribution of food, clothing and personal care items to those less fortunate. Fontbonne’s NHS president Michelle Sahlani promoted the project, and enthusiastic supporters ensured its success. NHS members contributed serving muffins, fruit and juice. They collected personal care items and organized them into hygiene kits.

Judy Rubertone and her daughter, Ava, a second-grade student at St. Patrick Catholic Academy, worked with Ava’s class to contribute brown-bag meals for 60 people.

The transportation company, BusPages, donated its services for the day. Deena Sellers, the NHS advisor at Xavier H.S., Manhattan, and one of her students assisted as well.

The Breakfast Run is an example of the community work done by NHS members at Fontbonne. Other projects include volunteering with the Seniors in Touch Program at Shore Hill Senior Housing and collecting toys for Catholic Charities at Christmastime.

Recently, 20 new members – who have demonstrated exceptional character, leadership, scholarship and service – were inducted into the NHS at Fontbonne. They will continue the society’s tradition of service to others.
