Letters to the Editor

Book-Reading Pastor

Dear Editor: Sincere thank you to The Tablet for the excellent coverage (Dec. 6) of the recent rededication ceremony at the McGoldrick library in Flushing.

Father Edward McGoldrick was the founding pastor of St. Andrew Avellino parish in 1914 and he worked tirelessly to have a library established in the community. He was successful and after he passed away in 1930 the library branch was re-named in his honor.

As the result of several relocations and renovations over the years, the proper identification of the library was lost. A bronze plaque with his picture and inscription explaining his historic role was unveiled at the ceremony which was presided over by Queens Public Library President Dennis Walcott and included a prayer by St. Andrew Avellino Pastor Father Joseph Holcomb.

As parish historian, I was motivated to do the research which culminated in the ceremony. It was wonderful and strange addressing a standing room only crowd at the library to commemorate a priest who had died 67 years ago.
