Letters to the Editor

Blessings of Maryknoll

Dear Editor: I read with interest your article concerning Bishop Francis X. Ford and his hopefully impending sainthood.

You mentioned Sister Betty Mahieu. In 1949 when I entered Maryknoll, we were in the same group. She was a very creative and intelligent person and as a point of interest, her brother, Bob, was a personal lawyer for Howard Hughes.

Have you read, “Here I Am, Lord,” the story of Sister Ita Ford, a Maryknoll nun and cousin to Bishop Ford? Ita and three other religious women were murdered in 1980 in El Salvador.

How blessed we are to have lived in an age of martyrs who lived in our town of “Brooklyn.”
