Black History Month Events

February is Black History Month and parishes around the diocese have planned special events and observances, including the following:

Our Lady of the Presentation-Our Lady of Mercy, Brownsville, is hosting its annual African Heritage Month Film Festival.
The schedule is: “Hidden Figures,” Feb. 10; “Hotel Rwanda,” Feb. 17; “42,” Feb. 24 and “Nothing Without God,” March 3. Call 718-345-2604.

St. Peter Claver Church, Bedford-Stuyvesant, will host its parish Black History Month Mass, Feb. 11 at 12 p.m. The guest celebrant and homilist will be Father Michael Trail of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Ill. Refreshments follow in the lower church. Call 718-574-5772.

Bishop Roy Edward Campbell Jr., auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., will be the guest celebrant and homilist at a Black History Month Mass of Thanksgiving at the Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston, on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.
The Mass is co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Diocese’s Vicariate of Black Catholic Concerns and the Rockville Centre Diocese’s Office of Multicultural Diversity. For more details, call 718-574-5772.

St. Clare, Rosedale, will have its Black History Month Mass, Feb. 25, 11 a.m. The main celebrant and homilist will be Father Alonzo Cox, pastor of St. Martin de Porres parish, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and diocesan coordinator of ministry to African-American Catholics. Call 718-341-1018.

Tickets are available for three events at The Sheen Center, Greenwich Village:
– Race in America: Telling Our Stories, with award-winning poets, Sapphire, Major Jackson, and Patrick Phillips, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
– Little Rock: A Staged Reading and Panel Conversation, with playwright Carlotta Walls LaNier and a member of The Little Rock Nine, will take place on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 3 and 7:30 p.m.
– Jackie Robinson: The Faith Behind the Legend with Fox News correspondent Ed Henry, and commentator Juan Williams, will be conducted on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m.
