St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy is located in the Lefferts Gardens area of Flatbush. St. Francis has educated children for 105 years in the Catholic tradition of excellence. The school has incorporated the Common Core State Standards and is committed to including art and music to enhance the educational program. Various activities, including school shows, oratorical competitions, musical lessons and parish events, develop and honor the many gifts of the children.
The academy’s educators seek to provide students with an excellent religious and academic education. The Faith Formation Program enables students to develop a deeper understanding of the teachings of Jesus. Through an integrated curriculum, cooperative learning, peace education and community service, the academy strives to develop the students’ skills, abilities, talents and attitudes, which will enable students to become caring, competent individuals with a sense of reverence for the earth and all its inhabitants. The academy hopes to empower its students to exercise their responsibility as Christians to work with others to create a just and peaceful world.
The academy is proud of the accomplishments of its students who receive competitive test scores on N.Y.S. standardized tests. More than half of the graduates go on to Catholic high schools such as Bishop Loughlin, St. Joseph, St. Edmund Prep and Cristo Rey Brooklyn, where they have received more than $170,000 in scholarships. Public and private school acceptances in the recent past include Midwood H.S., Brooklyn Latin School and Brooklyn High School of the Arts, St. Ann’s School and Brooklyn Friends School.
The academy’s staff consists of dedicated educators and has been administered by the Sisters of St. Joseph since the school opened in 1909. Dedicated to its patron, St. Francis of Assisi, peace education is integral to its program. Students are instructed to act as peer mediators. Classes include a focus on conflict resolution and non-violent behavior, and the school’s Peace Garden is a continual reminder of its commitment to creating a peaceful society.
The school teaches students from pre-kindergarten to grade eight. Financial aid is available through programs sponsored by the Diocese of Brooklyn and the St. Francis of Assisi Alumni Scholarship Program.
