St. Andrew Avellino School is a Catholic elementary school in Flushing, Queens, and home to over 300 students.
The school is dedicated to living the principles of the Catholic tradition rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which allows students to learn to serve God and others, to develop their unique talent and skills, to strive for academic excellence and to become lifelong learners.
St. Andrew Avellino is home to students ranging from nursery through eighth grade and also includes a Tiny Tot program.
The nursery program aims to create a nurturing and stimulating environment, where the children can gain independence.
The school’s primary goal is furthering physical development, cooperation, socialization, pre-language, math and science skills.
The goal of the pre-K program at St. Andrew Avellino is to educate the whole child, not just academically but also socially, emotionally and spiritually in a warm and nurturing environment.
Children have the opportunity to creatively meet ELA and math Common Core curriculum standards through art, music, movement, technology, social studies and science.
More importantly, the children learn about God and His love for them. Catholic identity is lived daily by the faculty, staff and students in order to prepare them for a positive spiritual life. The students take pride in attending Mass on a weekly basis and reaching out to the community and providing community service.
The school not only shines academically, earning top scores in Terra Nova and State testing, but also boasts an excellent art and music program. Students can enjoy both music and art as a part of the daily curriculum or take part in one of the after-school programs. The students are exposed to after-school music ensembles such as chorus, percussion, strings, piano, guitar and beginner or advanced band. The art program hosts an exhibit annually where all are welcome to experience works of art created by students of all grades.
The enriched after-school program includes Spanish classes and an enhanced science program. Students who are in sixth grade can join the debate club, which is held twice a week.
The faculty and staff, along with the parents and families, strive to make the school a safe and positive learning environment.
