Back to School 2014 – Future Leaders Shine at Mary, Queen of Heaven

Mary, Queen of Heaven School has educated the children of Mill Basin for over 65 years, with emphasis on educating the whole child – academically, spiritually and socially – in preparation for their future role as citizens in a diverse society.

The faculty and staff are dedicated to maintaining a Christian atmosphere of respect, love and concern for all students.

Attention is focused on the Common Core Standards, and new strategies for learning have been implemented. As part of the curriculum, the younger grades learn music, while the older grades learn to speak Spanish. The school also offers an early morning drop-off and after-school program.

The school community attends First Friday Mass, a monthly prayer service, and this year, all grades are currently involved in community service, which is a reminder to students of their faith.

Monthly assemblies are designed to encourage the children to achieve, and a student from each class is honored as “Student of the Month.” All students that have arrived on time daily, completed all their assignments and follow school policies become “Lords and Ladies” of the Queen’s Court.

The school has a Junior Beta Club that is responsible for conducting a school-wide charitable project each month, such as collecting food for the food pantry, helping less fortunate children or sending cards to the homebound.

Some eighth-grade students attend St. Edmund Prep in Sheepshead Bay each morning for a high school class in Earth science in preparation for the June Regents exam. Former graduates have received scholarships to such prestigious high schools as Regis, Xavier, Bishop Loughlin, St. Saviour and Bishop Kearney.
