Light Shines on Newest Parishioners in Flushing

Almost 1,200 new Catholics entered the Church last weekend at Easter Vigil services throughout Brooklyn and Queens.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio was the main celebrant at St. Michael’s Church, Flushing, where he baptized 18 adults, confirmed those and 28 more and also led a profession of faith by more than 40 Anglicans who came into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

Easter Vigil Is Special – Not to Be Missed

The Easter Vigil service is the most dramatic liturgy of the Chuch calendar. It begins with the church in complete darkness. And then a single flame atop the Paschal Candle pierces the darkness, a symbol of the Light of Jesus Christ Risen from the dead. Light overcomes the dark. Good prevails over evil. Sight where there was blindness.

Mass Will Offer Healing To Sex Abuse Survivors

It’s not easy to step forward and accuse a member of the clergy of sexual abuse – especially when that clergyman is a close friend of the family. That was the personal experience of two survivors of clergy sexual abuse who spoke about their experiences on In the Arena, the WOR radio show hosted by Msgr. Kieran Harrington and shown on NET-TV.

Family Spirit Sustains Men, Women in Blue

It hasn’t been a very good year to be a police officer. Ferguson! The Eric Garner Grand Jury decision! The assassinations of Detectives Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos! They have been just some of the hurdles that law enforcement officials have had to jump this year. That’s why it was important that this year’s Communion-breakfast […]

‘Fifth Gospel’ Is a Story About Vatican Intrigue

In a few months, I will be asking our readership to submit the names of books they will be reading this summer. I will be disappointed if Ian Caldwell’s “The Fifth Gospel” is not among the selections.

Published this week by Simon and Schuster, this mystery novel will remind the reader of “The DaVinci Code,” but ultimately it is less cynical of the Church and more about redemption and the human soul. But it’s also a great mystery story that involves deception, intrigue and murder, most of which takes place within the walls of Vatican City.

More and More People Are Joining the Church

While Christians around the world continue to face persecution for their faith, large numbers of Americans continue to flock to the Catholic Church.

This Easter, parishes in Brooklyn and Queens will welcome almost 1,100 new members to their congregations. These men and women who wish to join the Church have been preparing with weekly lessons for the past several months through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults program.

Despite Fire, Parish Life Continues

When fire damaged Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Corona on Jan. 5, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio was one of the first on the scene to inspect the site. He returned last weekend to celebrate Mass with the parish community and encourage their efforts to rebuild. “I wanted to just be here with the people at […]

Cathedral Club Champions Catholic Schools

At the 115th annual Cathedral Club dinner, education was the focus, and Bishop DiMarzio told the audience that that the education tax credit proposal has gained new momentum.
