What the Pope Really Said About Trump

The exchange between Pope Francis and Donald Trump was the biggest much-ado-about- nothing political story of the campaign. The headlines blared about the pope denouncing Trump and Trump firing back at the pope. It was all nonsense. A tempest in a fuselage.

Pope in Mexico Offers Reality Check to Church

One thing about Pope Francis is that he doesn’t mince words. He speaks directly to people and to problems and he offers practical solutions. No papal platitudes. No guessing where he stands. And while his words may have been spoken this past week in Mexico, they offer a reality to the Church around the globe. Just ask the Bishops of Mexico whom he addressed as a body in Mexico City last weekend. He spoke candidly about pitfalls that can tempt the clergy and he offered sound advice on how to avoid such problems.

Cathedral Club Hears Call for Better People In Public Life

A lack of civility in the public debate at home and religious intolerance around the world are two of the biggest problems facing modern society. That was the message of New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, the main speaker at the 116th annual dinner of the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, Feb. 4 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Manhattan.

‘Fake’ Priests Can Be Threats to Minors

Sometimes a priest isn’t the priest he seems to be! It was not the first time the Brooklyn Diocese had warned about Father Barajas. When the diocese investigated his credentials, it discovered that he never professed the final vows of the order and may never even have been ordained.

March for Life Was More Than a Numbers Game

The New York Times reported that “hundreds” of people showed up for the annual March for Life on Jan. 22 in the nation’s capital. The Washington Post was a little more generous by saying that “thousands” were there. The event’s organizers and participants estimated that there were actually about 50,000 brave souls who were present, despite the threat of one of the East Coast’s largest snowstorms ever, to demonstrate against the atrocity of abortion.

Little Sisters Are Wrong People to Pick On

The dumbest thing the Obama administration ever did was to try to make an example out of the Little Sisters of the Poor. The Little Sisters of the Poor, whose values are Reverence, Family Spirit, Humble Service, Compassion and Stewardship, have a target on their backs. The Little Sisters of the Poor, who serve the […]

January 1 Has Extra Meaning for Haitians

Liturgically, on Jan. 1, we celebrated the Feast of Mary, Mother of God. Of course, the day also marked the first of a New Year. For the Haitian community, it also was the 212th observance of the Independence Day of their homeland.

No Tricks, Just Treats From Bright Christmas

I just finished reading a book titled “The Santa Claus Man: The Rise and Fall of a Jazz Age Con Man and the Invention of Christmas in New York.”
The author is Alex Palmer and the main subject is John Duvall Gluck, Jr., a distant relative of the author.
