Assisted Suicide Laws

Dear Editor: As Catholics we are reminded that we should respect and protect life from conception to natural death.

Currently three states, Washington, Oregon, and Vermont have so-called ”Death With Dignity” (doctor-assisted suicide) laws. Vermont passed its statute in 2013. The New Jersey Assembly passed a resolution on Nov. 12, 2014 to pass a similar law which will go on to its Senate and ultimately to the governor if approved.

Recently New York Senator Democrat Brad Hoylman co-sponsored similar legislation for New York State. This is not so-called “pulling the plug” where life support means are disconnected or just denied allowing humans to die a natural death. This legislation would allow doctors to purposely end another human’s life. Think of Dr. Jack Kervorkian from 10 or 15 years ago.

Doctors are supposed to be trained and sworn to preserve human lives, not take them.
