Dear Editor: Jim Mancari’s article (Aug. 17) about the Olympic swimmer was very well done.
However, in this present era most Catholic schools, in order to survive, enroll students of other faiths and cultures. Although the Catholic students represented both the U.S. and their local Catholic schools, their main witness was not to their religion, but to their excellent performance in their particular sport.
With this in mind, I think you could have cited Sue Bird’s fifth gold medal for excellence in basketball. She has been both an outstanding person as well as an outstanding athlete. She attended, trained at, and graduated from Christ the King H.S. in Middle Village and is still loyal to the school.
