Former St. John’s University, Jamaica, basketball standouts Gus Alfieri and Jayson Williams were inducted Sept. 14 into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 27th annual induction dinner held at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan.

Alfieri, a member of the university’s All-Century Team, was a three-year letter winner at St. John’s from 1956 to 1959 and averaged 10.8 pts. per game during his career playing for Joe Lapchick.

He was elected to the hall of fame as a coach for St. Anthony’s H.S., South Huntington, L.I., where he coached nearly two decades at the school and guided his teams to two state championships and four diocesan titles.

Williams, a graduate of Christ the King H.S., Middle Village, played three seasons at St. John’s for Lou Carnesecca, totaling 1,072 pts. and 490 rebounds. Two of his teams earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament.

He was the 21st overall selection in the 1990 NBA draft. After two years with the Philadelphia 76ers, he played the bulk of his NBA career with the New Jersey Nets.
