Just before the Year for Consecrated Life closed Feb. 2, Ave Maria Catholic Academy in Howard Beach received visits from religious sisters representing four congregations: Sister Margaret Anne Meyer, M.M.M.; Sister Niky, C.S.J.B.; Mother Bendita, S.S.V.M. and Sister Peace, S.S.V.M.; and Sister Mary Lou Tressy, O.S.U., also known as Sister Jerome, a former teacher and principal at Our Lady of Grace School.

Do you desire to serve those less fortunate? Are you willing to be transformed by compassion? Women, age 21 and older, are invited to apply for the St. Joseph Worker Program, a one-year volunteer opportunity coordinated by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I.
Volunteers serve 35 hours a week at sites that provide social service, education, health care, advocacy and systematic change. Room and board and a monthly stipend are provided. The program runs from August, 2016, to June, 2017.

Jesuit Father Thomas Scirghi, an associate professor of theology at Fordham University, the Bronx, will lead a Lenten Retreat on March 5 at St. Sebastian Church, Woodside. “We Dwell Within the Word of God” is the theme for the day, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Next month, Regina Opera Company will present a fully staged performance of “Lucia di Lammermoor” at Our Lady of Perpetual Help auditorium in Sunset Park. The show dates are currently set for March 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 3 p.m.
This tuneful tragedy, presented in Italian with English supertitles, tells the story of a bitter feud between Scottish clans that leads to misfortune for a young girl and her lover, Edgardo, who will be played by Heejae Kim, pictured, on March 6 and 12.

St. Thomas Aquinas parish, Flatlands, will once again host a Lenten Prayer Room, a multi-sensory experience that encourages participants to reflect more deeply on the meaning of Lent, Holy Week and the Resurrection.
Located in the Aquinas Center, the room will be open March 11, 1-9 p.m.; March 12, 9 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. and March 13, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Father Joseph Gibino, pastor of Holy Trinity, Whitestone, will offer a retreat over the weekend. Guests are also welcome to avail themselves of the sacraments of reconciliation and the Eucharist, as well as walk through the church’s Holy Doors.

St. Anselm Catholic Academy, Bay Ridge, is buzzing about fifth grader James Schmidt’s recent win at the school’s math bee. The competition, organized by teacher Janet Batista for grades three, four and five, was attended by school parents and families, Principal James McKeon and members of the board of directors.
