A Missa Cantata (sung Mass in Latin) will be celebrated at St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Downtown Brooklyn, on Laetare Sunday, March 6, at 12:30 p.m. Father Stephen Giulietti, parochial vicar at St. Bernadette’s parish, Dyker Heights, will be the main celebrant. Father Peter Purpura, rector of St. James, will preach the homily.
Laetare Sunday is the name given to the Fourth Sunday in Lent. It has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration because it signifies that Lent is half over. Laetare means “Rejoice” and the Introit in both the Traditional Latin Mass and the Novus Ordo begins with the words, “Laetare, Jerusalem,” “Rejoice, O Jerusalem.”
