Bishop Places Retired Priest on Administrative Leave

The Diocese of Brooklyn has placed Msgr. Thomas Brady on administrative leave following an allegation of inappropriate contact with a minor.  He will remain on leave pending a thorough investigation of the matter by the Staten Island District Attorney.  Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes recused himself from the case because of a personal friendship with Msgr. Brady.

Msgr. Brady was born in 1933 and ordained a priest in 1959.  He retired as pastor of Good Shepherd parish on June 30, 2009. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has requested prayers for “the victims of misconduct as well as for Msgr. Brady.”

A spokesperson for the diocese said that Msgr. Brady had suffered two strokes and was recently undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer.  A relative said Msgr. Brady had been showing some signs of dementia and that he was just not himself lately.

Bishop DiMarzio encourages any person who has been abused by clergy or church personnel to report the abuse to civil authorities and a reporting line has been established to facilitate that process: 888-643-4499.  All calls are handled with the utmost respect and confidentiality.
