Sister Mary Joyce Was Longtime Educator

Sister Mary Joyce LeRoy, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, L.I., for 74 years, died Oct. 8. She was 92.

Originally from Brooklyn, Joan Mary met the Amityville Dominicans in her parish, St. Thomas the Apostle in Woodhaven, and attended the Dominican Sisters’ Juniorate, Water Mill, L.I. Upon graduation, she entered the congregation on Sept. 12, 1940. She was accepted into the congregation on Aug. 4, 1941 – her 19th birthday.

She began her ministry in elementary education at St. Barbara’s School, Bushwick, and continued on the secondary level teaching mathematics at Dominican Commercial H.S., Jamaica; St. Barbara’s H.S., Bushwick; St. Agnes A.H.S., College Point; St. Bartholomew, Elmhurst, an annex to Bishop McDonnell M.H.S.; Annunciation, Brooklyn; Bishop McDonnell M.H.S., Crown Heights; All Saints, Williamsburg; Bishop Reilly H.S., Fresh Meadows; and Bishop Loughlin M.H.S., Fort Greene.

From 1992 to 2000, she lived in St. Margaret’s Convent, Middle Village, and ministered through intercessory prayer. Failing health necessitated a move to the Motherhouse in 2000 and eventually to Carlin Hall in 2011. 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held in St. Albert’s Chapel at the Motherhouse on Oct. 11.

Interment in the Sisters’ cemetery followed.
