Remembering Father Andrew Varano

Dear Editor: On June 22, we said our final goodbye to a man who meant so much to so many, Father Andrew Varano, (“A Priest With ‘Love, Care’ for Others,” Obituary, page 9).

Father Varano was a priest like no other. He was a friend to everyone, charitable in a way we should all strive to be, and unfailingly kind to every person he met.

Everyone has their Father Varano stories, and each one is special, filled with warmth, laughter, and love for a man who touched so many lives.

I was blessed to have Father Varano as a constant presence in my life for as long as I can remember, not only as our parish priest, but as a member of our extended family.

I spent many years working in the parish rectory alongside Father Varano.

Only now do I realize what a gift it was to spend some of my most formative years with such an extraordinary man.

He taught me so much during that time, and in ways I did not fully appreciate then, he was helping shape the person I would become.

Father Varano, thank you for your friendship, your guidance, your faith, and your example.

May you rest in Christ’s loving embrace. We will miss you always.

Dear Editor: Thank you for featuring me in a recent story about my experience at the 2026 Sports Emmy Awards (“Chaminade Senior Earns Sports Broadcasting Scholarship,” Currents News, June 9).

It was great to be interviewed at my high school, Chaminade, a few weeks ago, and I loved seeing the story.

Thanks again for covering my experience, and have an amazing  summer!

Protecting Haitian Refugees

Dear Editor: With the nation’s history still top of mind following its 250th anniversary, Google what is written in the poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, which is engraved on a bronze plaque inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty and ask yourself if we are not making her into a liar if we exile the Haitian people who have come here for refuge and are now threatened with a forced return to that place which President Donald Trump acknowledges to be a word which should not be repeated (“Catholic Parishioners Pray as Haitians Face Loss of TPS Protections,”
Currents News, June 29).

The duplicity of revoking TPS status for these exiles reveals how far we have yet to go to become that harbor of safety that has made us the great country that we are.
