CARROLL GARDENS — A fire erupted at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Carroll Gardens, causing damage to the church’s bell tower on Saturday, Oct. 12, officials from the Diocese of Brooklyn confirmed.

The blaze, which was described by diocese officials as “a small electrical fire,” was quickly extinguished by the FDNY and caused minimal damage to the bell tower. The tower stands four stories above street level.

There were no reported injuries.

“We are grateful to the FNDY for their quick response, which prevented the fire from spreading and causing any major damage,” the diocese said in a statement.

In addition to the minor damage to the bell tower itself, water was discovered in the church’s sacristy. And a side door was damaged when firefighters broke it open to gain access to the building, diocese officials said. The door was boarded up to prevent anyone from trespassing.

A restoration crew was scheduled to be onsite on Sunday morning to clean and deodorize the church and mitigate any smoke and water damage to the 169-year-old building.

“The necessary measures are already underway to secure the tower,” the diocese stated.

Msgr. Guy Massie, the administrator of St. Mary Star of the Sea, told diocese officials that Sunday Mass would go on as scheduled at 9 a.m. Msgr. Massie is the pastor of Sacred Hearts and St. Stephen’s Church in Carroll Gardens.

St. Mary Star of the Sea Church posted a message on its Facebook page thanking the FDNY and expressing gratitude to a higher power. “Let’s give thanks to God,” the message read.
