Father Edwin Moran, CP, of the Holy Family, a Passionist priest of the St. Paul of the Cross Province of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, died at the Immaculate Conception Passionist Monastery in Jamaica, Queens, on May 18 at age 92.
A native of Flushing, he was the son of the late Terence Moran and the late Grace Morrison Moran. Father Moran attended Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, and graduated from Flushing High School in 1949.
He attended St. Francis College and graduated from Holy Cross Seminary in Dunkirk, New York, in 1953. He entered the Passionist novitiate in 1953 and professed vows at St. Paul of the Cross Monastery, Pittsburgh, in 1954. After completing his studies in Philosophy and Theology, he was awarded a Degree of Master of Theology in 1961. Bishop Cuthbert O’Gara, the Passionist Bishop of Yuanling, Hunan Province, China, ordained him to the priesthood on April 7, 1961, at St. Michael Monastery church in Union City, N.J.
Father Moran served as Director of the Confraternity of the Passion and conducted retreats at Immaculate Conception Monastery, Jamaica, New York, from 1963 to 1965.
He was Parochial Vicar at St. Gabriel Monastery, Boston, from 1966 to 1970. Father Moran conducted retreats for religious sisters and for youth in Dunkirk from 1970 to 1972. He then transferred in 1972 to Calvary Retreat Center, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, where he was Associate Retreat Director until 1982.
In 1984 he was assigned to Saint Paul of the Cross Monastery, Pittsburgh, and served as Retreat Preacher, a Spiritual Director, and Vocation Coordinator until his transfer to the Immaculate Conception Monastery, Jamaica, in 2020 and continued his proclamation of the love of God in the Passion of Jesus Christ until his death.
A Mass of Resurrection and Christian Burial were celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Monastery Chapel and Cemetery, Jamaica, on Thursday, May 25, 2023.
