Obituary: Sister Catherine Stern, O.P.

Sister Catherine Stern, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, for 76 years, died Dec. 14. She was 94.

Born in St. Aloysius parish, Ridgewood, she was one of the first students to attend the Dominican Juniorate, Water Mill, before joining the congregation in 1936.

She taught at Most Holy Trinity School, Williamsburg, 1939-40; St. Luke, Whitestone, 1940-41; Our Lady of Sorrows, Manhattan, 1941-43, and St. Frances de Chantal, Borough Park, 1943-48.

Her administrative skills were called upon in Isabela, Puerto Rico, 1948-55, and as principal and superior at Presentation of the B.V.M., Jamaica, 1955-61.

She also ministered at St. Ignatius, Hicksville, L.I., 1961-64; Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, Roosevelt, L.I., 1964-67; served as principal and superior at St. Peter, Monticello, N.Y., 1967-68; Christ the King, Commack, L.I., 1968-69; and Fourteen Holy Martyrs, Bushwick, 1969-71; Dominican Commercial H.S., Jamaica, 1971-73; St. Frances de Chantal, 1973-79; and Our Lady of Solace, Coney Island, 1979-81.

After retiring from teaching, she became a part-time librarian in Good Shepherd School, Marine Park.

She is survived by her sister, Gertrude Stern of Queens.
