Only in Print: Many Seniors Receive Communion Thanks to Homebound Ministry | November 30, 2019

BENSONHURST — The situation at the Norwegian Christian Home and Health Center, a nursing home and rehab center in Bensonhurst, is a familiar one for many elderly Catholics in Brooklyn and Queens.

Residents there who can’t make it to church because of physical limitations rely on a volunteer from the outside to bring them Communion. 

The practice of bringing Communion to elderly Catholics who are homebound or who live in nursing homes is widespread in the Diocese of Brooklyn. In the diocese, 152 parishes, about 85 percent of the total, have such ministries…
