A longtime nurse, Sister Mavis worked in Washington, D.C., Connecticut, Missouri and Pennsylvania and in several places in upstate New York. In 2017, she was honored when a recuperative-care center for the homeless at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, N.Y., was named after her. The Sister Mavis Jewell Respite Care program, a place for homeless people to recuperate after hospitalizations, was the first of its kind in the Albany area.
A funeral Mass for Sister Mavis was offered at the Daughter of Charity DePaul House Chapel in Albany. Burial followed at St. Agnes Cemetery in Menands, N.Y
