Sister Joan A. Ryan, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 67 years, died June 17 at the Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.
She entered the congregation from Holy Name parish, Windsor Terrace.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from St. Joseph’s College and St. John’s University; a master’s in history from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.; a master’s in theology from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, L.I.; a master’s in library science from CW Post; and a doctorate in history from the State University of New York.
Formerly known as Sister Marie De La Salle, her ministries included St. Martin of Tours, Bushwick, 1953-56; St. Stanislaus Kostka, Maspeth, 1956-60; Academy of St. Joseph H.S., Brentwood, 1960-69; and St. Joseph’s College in Clinton Hill, 1969-78, and Patchogue, 1979-89.
She also served as a librarian in St. Joseph’s College, Patchogue, 1989, before retiring to Brentwood.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 21 at St. Joseph Renewal Center, Brentwood. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.
