St. Adalbert Third-Graders Love and Pray

Third-graders at St. Adalbert Church, Elmhurst, are putting their faith into action. Seven students from the parish’s CCD program organized a charity bake sale on Saturday, April 14, to raise funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Save the Children, an organization that continues to help children in Puerto Rico impacted by Hurricane Maria. The students’ homemade specialties raised $250 and the proceeds are being split between the two charities to reach a wide-range of children in need.

Sacred Heart Academy in East Glendale held an assembly to mark the beginning of Earth Week. The guest speaker was Miss Earth USA Andreia Gibau who is a 2017 graduate of St. John’s University. She discussed with the children the importance of preserving and respecting the earth.

The Bridge to Life hosted its 26th annual dinner gala April 15 at Leonard’s Palazzo in Great Neck. Over 300 attendees came to honor Sir Knight Michael Hilley, PGK, FDD and the Olympia Council of the Knights of Columbus No. 394, located at Mary’s Nativity in Flushing.

Sir Knight Hilley, who retired from JP Morgan Chase in 1997, worked with program founder, Eleanor Ruder. In his retirement, Hilley spearheaded fundraising events to sponsor Mother’s Day Baby Showers, and coat drives. Along with Ralph Cefalo, he procured an ultrasound machine which is currently being utilized by the New Beginnings Center of Hope, located in Jamaica, NY, one of the highest abortion-rate cities in the U.S.

The Olympia Council No. 394 of the Knights of Columbus was charted 119 years ago in Flushing. This council services the parish of Mary’s Nativity and St. Ann.

Past activities include blood drives, coat drives, barbecues, essay contests for local schools, and Right to Life marches.

The Bridge to Life founder made a promise that when she retired, she would open a pregnancy help center to help women who did not have the same support she did. In 1992, Ruder fulfilled that promise when she retired from her career in banking and started The Bridge to Life.
