Former Charities Employee Worked 43 Years for Diocese

Abecinia “Baisy” Apostol, a member of the administrative staff of DeSales Media since 2014, died April 22 at Stony Brook University Hospital on Long Island. She was 65.

Prior to working with DeSales, she had a long career with Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens, including serving as personal secretary to Auxiliary Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan, from 1992 to 2013.

She began work at Catholic Charities in 1975 as secretary to then-Father Thomas Cribbin and the Office for the Handicapped.

In 1977, she became an administrative secretary and in 1983 transferred to the Charities agency that had been known as “Builders for Family and Youth.”

In 1988, she returned to the administrative staff of Catholic Charities.

She was the last person to speak with Bishop Sullivan before he was injured in the fatal car accident on the Long Island Expressway that led to his death.

Apostol, who was born in the Philippines, is survived by her husband Tonih, who also worked at Catholic Charities in the comptroller’s office; and their children, Charles and Barbara.

“Baisy was a caring and affective member of the Catholic Charities family,” said Robert Siebel, former CEO of Catholic Charities. “Her support to Msgr. Tom Cribbin and Bishop Joe Sullivan greatly enhanced the ministries of these good priests.”

“We are all tremendously saddened with Baisy’s passing,” said Arthur Dignam, CEO of DeSales Media.

“She was a light of true Christian spirit, always with a smile and seeing the good in people. For over 43 years, she dedicated herself to the Diocese and God’s work. Her enthusiasm and personality will be missed.”

Olga Rimando posted the following message:

“Baisy, my friend. You’ve left a mark in our hearts. Your goodness and kindness will forever be cherished. I will miss your smile and laughter, too.”

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 27 at Good Shepherd Church, Holbrook, L.I.

Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.
