Irish-American H.S. Essay Contest

High school students who are interested in researching Irish American history and the contributions of Irish Americans to the U.S. are asked to submit a five-to-eight minute essay, i.e. approximately 1,000 words on the theme of Commodore John Barry. It is said that Commodore Barry is a man for all ages. Based on your own personal study of this man’s life, what are three characteristics he exemplified that would speak to your fellow students.

Entries should be submitted between Nov. 5 and Feb. 17, 2017 electronically via email to info@commodorebarryclubbrooklyn.org as a MSWord attachment or in some compatible format. Winners will be announced by March 4, 2017. The first prize will be $1,000, the second $500 and the third $250. Past prize recipients are ineligible.

A jury of educators who have participated in past educational presentations will be the judges. The format shall be as follows. The first page shall be a cover letter indicating the name of the contestant, the title of the paper, the high school attended and the contact information for the contestant. The remaining pages shall not contain the name, high school or any other personal information about the contestant.

The authors of the top selected papers will be invited to deliver their papers at ceremonies at Commodore Barry Park, Downtown Brooklyn on March 11, 2017. More information at: 718-833-3405 or www.commodorebarryclubbrooklyn.org.
