Hispanic Catholics Have Remained Faithful

As the nation observes Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins Sept. 15, the Church has much to celebrate. Historically, the Spaniards evangelized much of what is now the U.S., extending in a great arc from St. Augustine in Florida, where the first Mass was celebrated in 1565, to the San Juan straits in what is now Washington state.

Fraternal Correction Is an Act of Love

People should talk to each other. When two persons are in conflict, they should try to resolve the situation among themselves. Only if they cannot come to an agreement should others be brought into the conversation.

As I read Pope Francis’ “The Joy of the Gospel” for the third or fourth time, I continue to discover sections that seem new to me. What I mean is that they strike me in a new way or say something that I appreciate in a new way.

Retired Cardinal Szoka Dies at the Age of 86

Cardinal Edmund C. Szoka, who rose from poor beginnings to reach the highest levels of service to the Church, died Aug. 20 at Providence Park Hospital in Novi, Mich. The cardinal, who was 86, died of natural causes.
